Gas Conversions

Whilst your gas unit rate will be measured in kWh and you will pay for your gas by the kWh your gas meter may record consumption in either cubic meters (m3) or hundreds of cubic feet (ft3).To make sense of your bill you will therefore need to convert your meter readings into kWh.

Converting m3 to kWh

To convert a metric meter, one that measures in m3 to kWh the calculation is as follows:

• Your meter advance (current read minus previous read) Multiplied by the ‘volume correction factor’ (1.02264)
• Multiplied by the ‘calorific value’ (40) and
• Divided by 3.6

As an example, if your metric meter advance were 100, this would become 102.264 after the correction factor and then 4090.56 after the calorific value is applied, and once this is divided by 3.6 the result is 1,136kWh.

Converting ft3 to kWh

To convert an imperial meter, one that measures in ft3 to kWh the calculation is as follows:

• Your meter advance (current read minus previous read)
• Multiplied by the ‘metric conversion factor’ (0.028317)
• Multiplied by the ‘volume correction factor’ (1.02264)
• Multiplied by the ‘calorific value’ (40) and
• Divided by 3.6
• Multiplied by 100

As an example, if your imperial meter advance were 100, this would become 28.317 after the conversion factor, 28.958 after the correction factor and then 1158.324 after the calorific value is applied, and once this is divided by 3.6 and multiplied by 100 the result is 32,175kWh.
